Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler is an American compact and mid-size off-road vehicle produced by Jeep since 1986.
American Motors Corporation created the model line to replace the CJ-7, providing an open body on a separate frame with four-wheel drive and removable doors.
Production began in March 1986 in Brampton, Ontario, featuring rectangular headlights and track bars on leaf-spring live axles. A major redesign in 1996 brought back traditional round headlamps and introduced coil-spring suspension derived from the Grand Cherokee to improve road comfort. The factory expanded the portfolio in 2004 with a long-wheelbase two-door model named the Unlimited. Four-door bodies appeared for the first time in 2006, expanding rear passenger space by over 51 cm (20 in) and transforming consumer sales across global markets.
Automotive journalists tested off-road durability on the Rubicon Trail, where factory packages offered electronic locking differentials and disconnecting front sway bars. The fourth major generation arrived for the 2018 model year with aluminum doors, a folding windshield, and optional turbocharged four-cylinder engines. In 2021, the manufacturer introduced an eight-cylinder Rubicon 392 generating 350 kW (470 hp), alongside a plug-in hybrid 4xe model combining electric motors with a gasoline engine. Production reached five million units in August 2023 at the Toledo assembly complex in Ohio.
Military forces in several countries adopted specialized patrol vehicles assembled under license in Egypt and Israel. Automotive publications acknowledged the vehicle frequently, including a 2019 Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Award in the off-road SUV category. The vehicle also appeared in prominent Hollywood films, notably the 1993 science-fiction adventure Jurassic Park, where staff drove customized red-and-sand utility vehicles across Isla Nublar. Toledo South Complex workers built the five-millionth unit as a 4xe Rubicon for a buyer in New Jersey.
