Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro is an American pony car manufactured by Chevrolet from 1966 to 2023. Chevrolet created the model to compete in the compact performance market, offering two-door coupe and convertible body styles. Across six generations, the nameplate sold over five million vehicles before final assembly ended in Lansing, Michigan.

Sales began in September 1966 for the 1967 model year, introducing the high-performance Z/28 package developed for road racing. The second generation arrived in 1970 with a longer fastback silhouette, reaching peak annual production in 1979 with 282,571 cars assembled. In 1982, the third generation introduced a rear hatchback, followed by the IROC-Z performance model in 1985. After fourth-generation assembly stopped in 2002, Chevrolet revived the badge for 2010 with a retro-styled fifth generation featuring an SS model producing 318 kW (426 hp). The sixth generation launched in 2015 and concluded production in December 2023.

Motorsport formed a core element of the car's identity from its earliest seasons. Mark Donohue drove a Penske Racing Camaro to win the SCCA Trans-Am championship in 1968 and 1969. The model served as the exclusive vehicle of the International Race of Champions from 1975 to 1989. In NASCAR Cup Series racing, Austin Dillon won the 2018 Daytona 500 driving the Camaro ZL1, and Chase Elliott captured the 2020 driver championship. At the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans, Hendrick Motorsports fielded a modified Cup car driven by Jimmie Johnson, Jenson Button, and Mike Rockenfeller.

Popular culture and track honors broadened the reach of the car beyond competition. The fifth-generation design gained global visibility in 2007 when director Michael Bay featured a yellow concept version as the Autobot character Bumblebee in the film Transformers. Track organizers selected the vehicle as the official Indianapolis 500 pace car for nine editions between 1967 and 2016. General Motors marked the conclusion of the line by producing a 2024 Collector's Edition package, with the final sixth-generation car rolling off the Lansing Grand River Assembly line on December 14, 2023.
