Volvo 240
The Volvo 240 was a mid-size executive car produced by Volvo from 1974 to 1993. It was sold in two-door sedan, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon configurations with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Developed as a single model generation spanning nineteen years, it received substantial styling and mechanical facelifts for the 1981 and 1986 model years.
Public unveiling took place on August 21, 1974, succeeding the Volvo 140 series while incorporating crumple zone engineering from experimental safety prototypes. In 1976, California export models introduced the Lambda Sond three-way catalytic converter system with an oxygen sensor, cutting exhaust emissions. United States regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bought a fleet of 240 sedans in 1976 to serve as benchmarks for setting American motor vehicle safety standards. Factory updates in 1990 added standard driver-side frontal airbags for the North American market.
In circuit racing, the turbocharged competition model gained the nickname The Flying Brick among European touring car spectators. Drivers Thomas Lindström and Gianfranco Brancatelli drove the vehicle to win the 1985 European Touring Car Championship. That same year, Swedish racer Per Stureson won the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft championship driving a turbo coupe. The road-going turbo version arrived in 1981, generating 114 kW (155 hp) from a 2.1-liter four-cylinder engine and reaching a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph). Station wagons offered an optional rear-facing folding third seat equipped with three-point seat belts.
Total assembly reached 2,685,171 units of the 240 series between 1974 and 1993, making it the most-produced vehicle line in corporate history. Production spanned manufacturing facilities in Torslanda, Sweden, alongside assembly operations in Ghent, Belgium, and Halifax, Canada. The British Insurance Association presented the car with an award for vehicle security design in 1991. Assembly ended on May 14, 1993, when the final station wagon rolled off the Torslanda line during a ceremony presided over by company chief executive Pehr Gyllenhammar.
