Subaru Impreza

The Subaru Impreza is a compact family car manufactured by Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992.

Production spans six generations, beginning in 1992 with four-door sedan and five-door station wagon bodies before adding a two-door coupe in 1995. The second generation arrived in 2000 with distinctive round headlights, followed by redesigned front fascias in 2002 and 2005. The third generation introduced a five-door hatchback in 2007, and the fifth generation arrived in 2016 built upon the modular Subaru Global Platform. The sixth generation debuted in 2022 as a hatchback only, featuring standard all-wheel drive and continuously variable transmissions.

In the World Rally Championship, the Impreza secured three consecutive manufacturers titles for Subaru between 1995 and 1997. Scottish driver Colin McRae won the drivers championship in 1995 behind the wheel of an Impreza 555, followed by titles for Richard Burns in 2001 and Petter Solberg in 2003. The road-going WRX variant debuted in 1992 with an output of 177 kW (237 hp). In 1998, Subaru released the widebody 22B STi coupe producing 206 kW (276 hp) to commemorate forty years of company vehicle production.

The fifth generation model won the Japan Car of the Year award for 2016–2017, praised for structural rigidity and standard collision-avoidance assistance systems. Subaru offered naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engines ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 liters alongside turbocharged variants. The vehicle also provided the mechanical basis for the Outback Sport and the Crosstrek crossover line, which added raised suspension for gravel travel. In 2014, Subaru separated the high-output WRX and STI models into an independent product line distinct from standard Impreza hatchbacks.
