Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 is a two-door sports car produced by German automaker Porsche in Stuttgart since 1964.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed the rear-engine layout to succeed the 356 model. Early versions carried a rear-mounted flat-six engine delivering 96 kW (128 hp). Production spans eight generations: the original series, the G-series introduced in 1973, followed by the 964, 993, 996, 997, 991, and 992. The 993 generation marked the final air-cooled models before water cooling arrived with the 996 in 1997. Body styles include a coupe, a cabriolet, and the Targa version with a removable roof section and fixed roll bar.

Porsche entered the model into circuit racing, rally events, and endurance trials worldwide. A factory-entered 911 finished fifth overall in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally, driven by Herbert Linge and Peter Falk. Modified racing versions achieved outright victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1973 and 1977. Vic Elford and Jochen Neerpasch took victory at the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona in a related competition entry. The Carrera RS 2.7 debuted in 1972 with a ducktail rear spoiler, producing 154 kW (207 hp) for sports car homologation.

Porsche built its one-millionth 911 in May 2017 at the Zuffenhausen factory, painting the car Irish Green. In the 1999 Car of the Century competition, an international panel of automotive journalists voted the model into fifth place overall. Steve McQueen drove a slate gray 1970 model in the opening scenes of the 1971 movie Le Mans. The factory produced high-performance variants such as the Turbo, GT3, and GT2 RS, which achieved a production car lap record of 6 minutes 47.3 seconds on the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in 2017.
