Peugeot 205

The Peugeot 205 is a French supermini car produced by Peugeot from 1983 to 1998. Credited with reversing the financial fortunes of the company, the vehicle offered practical three-door and five-door hatchback configurations. Pininfarina styled an open-top cabriolet version that entered the lineup in 1986.

Front-wheel drive and transverse four-cylinder engines defined the mechanical layout across all standard production models. Economical diesel models broadened showroom appeal in European markets alongside small-displacement gasoline versions. Performance variants arrived in 1984 with the introduction of the 1.6-liter GTI, which produced 77 kW (104 hp). A larger 1.9-liter GTI arrived in 1986, producing 94 kW (126 hp) and achieving a top speed of 206 km/h (128 mph) with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.8 seconds.

Motorsport engineers built a mid-engine, four-wheel-drive homologation version called the Turbo 16 to compete in international rallying under Group B regulations. Finnish driver Timo Salonen won the World Rally Championship drivers championship in 1985, securing the manufacturers crown for Peugeot the same season. Juha Kankkunen repeated the dual championship victory in 1986 behind the wheel of an updated Evolution version. Ari Vatanen then drove a long-wheelbase rally raid derivative to victory in the grueling Paris-Dakar Rally in 1987.

British publication What Car? named the hatchback its Car of the Year for 1984, while CAR Magazine crowned it the Car of the Decade in 1990. The model finished as runner-up in the 1984 European Car of the Year contest, trailing the Fiat Uno by a narrow margin of votes. Peugeot manufactured 5,278,300 units across fifteen years of production at assembly plants in France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Chile, and Indonesia. Assembly concluded in 1998 when the company introduced the Peugeot 206 as its official successor.
