McLaren F1
The McLaren F1 is a three-seat sports car produced in the United Kingdom by McLaren Cars from 1992 to 1998. Conceived by automotive engineer Gordon Murray, the vehicle made its public debut at the Sporting Club in Monaco in May 1992.
Murray devised an innovative three-seat cabin layout that positioned the driver in the center, flanked by two passenger seats set slightly rearward. The car used a carbon-fiber monocoque passenger survival cell, lined with pure gold foil in the engine bay to reflect exhaust heat. A 6.1-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine produced by BMW delivered 461 kW (618 hp) through a transverse six-speed manual gearbox. Production models lacked power steering, anti-lock braking, and electronic traction control, preserving unassisted physical feedback through the steering wheel and foot pedals for the operator.
Test driver Andy Wallace drove prototype XP5 to an independently verified two-way average top speed of 386.4 km/h (240.1 mph) at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien proving ground on March 31, 1998. The achievement established a Guinness World Record for production automobiles that stood unbroken for seven years. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h required 3.2 seconds during independent magazine instrument testing. Although conceived strictly for street driving, customer demand prompted the creation of racing variants, which debuted in the BPR Global GT Series during 1995.
In June 1995, drivers Yannick Dalmas, JJ Lehto, and Masanori Sekiya claimed outright victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in an entered racing variant, marking an unprecedented debut win for a road-based contender. Factory workers in Woking built 106 total chassis before manufacturing concluded in 1998. That tally comprised 64 standard road coupes, 28 competition racers, five LM commemorative editions, and three elongated GT models alongside five running development prototypes. A private collection sold an unmodified road example at auction in Pebble Beach in August 2021 for over twenty million dollars.
