Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 is an Italian city car line manufactured from 1957 to 1975 and again since 2007. Conceived by Italian engineer Dante Giacosa, the model provided economical urban transport across multiple eras in saloon, hatchback, estate, and convertible formats.

Fiat unveiled the initial version in Turin during July 1957. A rear-mounted two-cylinder motor delivered 10 kW (13 hp) and pushed the car to a maximum speed of 85 km/h (53 mph). A full-length folding canvas roof reduced sheet metal consumption during construction while providing open-air motoring. In 1960, the company added the Giardiniera wagon, placing its motor horizontally beneath the rear cargo area to secure an unbroken load floor. Front-hinged doors superseded the older rear-hinged layout during 1965 to comply with updated road safety rules. Production ceased in 1975 after factories completed 3,893,294 examples.

Fiat restarted the badge in July 2007, marking fifty years since the debut of the 1957 edition. The reimagined vehicle arrived as a front-wheel-drive three-door hatchback, joined in 2009 by the 500C convertible featuring an electrically retractable cloth roof track. In 2020, Fiat launched a third generation built purely around a battery-electric powertrain that produced 87 kW (117 hp). The modern line earned the 2008 European Car of the Year prize and the 2009 World Car Design of the Year title. By March 2021, the assembly facility in Tychy, Poland, turned out its 2.5-millionth vehicle.

In motorsport, tuner Carlo Abarth engineered high-performance adaptations like the 595 and 695 SS for European touring competitions. The runabout also gained exposure in popular animation. Hayao Miyazaki placed his title protagonist behind the wheel of a yellow 1957 car in the 1979 film The Castle of Cagliostro. Pixar later drew inspiration from a 1959 edition to shape the character Luigi in the 2006 film Cars. Dante Giacosa took the Compasso d'Oro design honor in 1959, and MoMA in Manhattan acquired a 1968 example for its permanent design collection in 2017.
