Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf is a compact family car produced by Volkswagen since 1974. Sold mainly as a three-door or five-door hatchback, the line also includes station wagon and convertible body styles. Volkswagen has developed eight generations of the vehicle, which transitioned the company from air-cooled rear engines to front-wheel drive.

Series production began in Wolfsburg on March 29, 1974, with styling designed by Italian stylist Giorgio Giugiaro. The first generation achieved one million sales by October 1976 and expanded to 6.9 million units before the second generation arrived in 1983. Over its production history, the model added front airbags in 1992 and all-wheel-drive configurations across multiple generations. By 2024, cumulative worldwide production passed 37 million units across factories in Germany, South Africa, and Mexico, making it the most-produced vehicle under the Volkswagen badge.

Performance models began in 1976 with the launch of the GTI, which used an engine producing 81 kW (110 hp) and reached a top speed of 182 km/h (113 mph). In motorsport, Swedish driver Kenneth Eriksson drove a front-wheel-drive GTI to win the 1986 Group A World Rally Championship title. Factory-backed and privateer teams entered the car into circuit competitions, including the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and global TCR touring car series. The eighth generation introduced plug-in hybrid variants delivering a combined output of 180 kW (242 hp).

Industry juries awarded the third generation the European Car of the Year trophy in 1992, ahead of the Citroën ZX. Two decades later, the seventh generation won both European Car of the Year and World Car of the Year in 2013, as well as the 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year in North America. The model was the best-selling automobile in Europe in 2001 and retained annual sales leadership in Germany for several consecutive decades. Assembly continues at the central Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, Germany.
