Toyota Supra

The Toyota Supra is a sports car and grand tourer produced by Toyota from 1978 to 2002 and since 2019. Built primarily as a three-door liftback coupe, it features a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. Across five generations, the vehicle evolved from a six-cylinder variant of an existing coupe into a standalone performance flagship.

Toyota introduced the nameplate in April 1978 as a longer version of the Celica liftback equipped with an inline-six engine. The second generation arrived in 1981 with pop-up headlights and wider fender flares for performance trims. In 1986, the third generation severed mechanical ties with the Celica, adopting an independent rear-wheel-drive platform and turbocharging. The fourth generation followed in 1993 with an aluminum hood and a rounded rear wing. After production paused in August 2002 due to emission rules, Toyota reintroduced the model in 2019 through a joint development project with BMW.

In cinema, a bright orange fourth-generation model gained international exposure in the 2001 action film The Fast and the Furious, driven by character Brian O'Conner. The car became a staple in video game franchises such as Gran Turismo and Need for Speed. In standard road trim, the 1993 twin-turbo model produced 239 kW (320 hp) and reached an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Automotive publications recorded its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, establishing its benchmark acceleration among sports coupes.

On the racetrack, the coupe won the driver championship in the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship in 1997 with driver Michael Krumm, followed by additional titles in 2001, 2002, and 2005. Factory-prepared entries contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995 and 1996, finishing fourteenth overall in their debut year. Car and Driver placed the model on its annual Ten Best list in 1983, 1984, and 1985. Magna Steyr manufactures the fifth-generation vehicle in Graz, Austria, supplying global distribution for Toyota.
