Toyota Land Cruiser
The Toyota Land Cruiser is a series of four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles produced by Toyota since 1951.
Production began in 1951 with the BJ prototype, developed during the Korean War using a truck chassis and a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine. Technical director Hanji Umehara coined the Land Cruiser name in 1954 to rival the British Land Rover. The 20 Series followed in 1955 for export markets, leading to the durable 40 Series introduced in 1960. Toyota split the model line into three distinct branches over time: heavy-duty work trucks, comfortable station wagons starting with the 55 Series in 1967, and lighter-duty models known as the Land Cruiser Prado from 1990.
In motorsport, Team Land Cruiser Auto Body secured multiple class victories in the production car category of the Dakar Rally across several decades. The 80 Series introduced full-time four-wheel drive and coil-spring suspension in 1989, while the 100 Series added independent front suspension in 1998. The 300 Series debuted in 2021 with a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 305 kW (409 hp) paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. In 2019, worldwide cumulative sales of all Land Cruiser variants surpassed 10 million units.
Assembly took place at plants in Japan, including Yoshiwara and Fujimatsu, alongside overseas manufacturing operations such as the Bandeirante production line in Brazil. Body configurations included two-door soft tops, removable hardtops, four-door wagons, and two-door cab chassis trucks. Mining companies, humanitarian agencies, and the United Nations deployed the 70 Series across remote desert and mountain environments due to its mechanical simplicity. In Australia, the model served as a standard vehicle across remote outback cattle stations and unpaved desert tracks.
