Chevrolet Corvette

The Chevrolet Corvette is an American two-seat sports car produced by Chevrolet since 1953. Created under styling director Harley Earl, the model entered production following positive public reactions to a prototype displayed in New York City.

Workers built the first series in Flint, Michigan, during June 1953 before General Motors transferred vehicle assembly to Missouri and later to Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1981. Buyers recognize the line across eight distinct generations, designated by enthusiasts and the company from C1 through C8. To keep curb mass low and bypass steel tooling delays, engineers chose fiberglass composite panels for the exterior skin. Over seven decades, body choices included soft-top convertibles and hardtop coupes fitted with removable roof sections. Chevrolet completed its one-millionth Corvette on July 2, 1992, at the Kentucky assembly facility.

For its first seven generations, the vehicle placed its engine in front of the driver and powered the rear wheels. Chevrolet revised this traditional arrangement for the eighth generation in 2020, mounting a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine behind the cockpit. Connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, this motor produces 369 kW (495 hp) when ordered with optional performance exhaust pipes. The rearward weight bias aids launch grip, enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds on its way to a top track speed of 312 km/h (194 mph).

The model gained broad television exposure through the 1960s series Route 66, following two wanderers across highway networks in a roadster. On road courses, the factory Corvette Racing team earned nine class wins during the French 24-hour endurance classic at Le Mans from 2001 through 2023. MotorTrend magazine gave its annual car honor to the fifth generation in 1998, and an independent jury chose the mid-engine design for the 2020 North American Car trophy. During June 2023, drivers Nicky Catsburg, Ben Keating, and Nicolás Varrone drove a C8.R to first place in the GTE Am category at Le Mans.
