Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a German full-size luxury sedan manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1972. Serving as the flagship passenger vehicle for the brand, the car introduced groundbreaking automotive innovations across seven distinct generations. Daimler built the line primarily in Sindelfingen, Germany, offering four-door sedans in standard and extended wheelbases alongside two-door coupes and convertibles.

Initial models from the 1970s used six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines, with a 6.9-liter V8 generating 210 kW (282 hp). Engineers introduced twelve-cylinder powertrains in 1991, followed later by high-output twin-turbocharged variants producing 450 kW (604 hp) and reaching an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). All-wheel drive became an option on fourth-generation models in 2002. Plug-in hybrid systems joined the lineup during the sixth generation, pairing electric drive motors with gasoline combustion engines to allow zero-emission urban travel.

Automotive safety advanced through systems that debuted on the sedan before spreading across the wider automotive industry. Anti-lock brakes developed with Bosch entered production on the flagship in 1978. Driver airbags and pyrotechnic seatbelt pretensioners arrived in 1981, followed by front passenger airbags in 1987. Electronic stability control made its worldwide automotive debut on the luxury coupe in 1995. Pre-collision occupant protection systems began monitoring onboard radar and sensor data in 2002 to tighten seatbelts and close open windows before unavoidable impacts.

Jurors named the 450 SE model the European Car of the Year in 1974, marking the first win for the brand in that competition. Australian publication Wheels presented its Car of the Year award to the second generation in 1981. Governments and heads of state across dozens of nations selected armored protection variants for official diplomatic transport. Worldwide customer deliveries exceeded four million sedans by 2020, establishing the model as a global benchmark for executive passenger travel.
