Land Rover Defender
The Land Rover Defender is an all-terrain utility vehicle produced by British manufacturer Land Rover since 1983. It originated as a coil-sprung development of the post-war Series Land Rovers that first emerged from Solihull in 1948.
Engineers launched the long-wheelbase One Ten in 1983 and the shorter Ninety in 1984, introducing coil springs from the Range Rover to replace traditional leaf springs. Permanent four-wheel drive and front disc brakes improved highway behavior and off-road articulation across uneven terrain. Land Rover adopted the Defender badge in 1990 to differentiate the rugged workhorse from the newly released Discovery. Power units evolved from naturally aspirated four-cylinder diesels to a 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel in 1998, which generated 90 kW (121 hp) for military and agricultural fleets.
Worldwide humanitarian organizations, conservation teams, and armed forces adopted the utility vehicle for severe expeditions across remote deserts and jungles. The British Army commissioned specialized military derivatives known as the Wolf for reconnaissance and patrol missions starting in 1996. After assembling 2,016,933 vehicles spanning the original Series and classic Defender lineage, workers at the Solihull factory completed the final original-specification vehicle on January 29, 2016. Filmmakers featured the rugged machine in major international film productions, including the James Bond cinematic adventures Skyfall in 2012 and No Time to Die in 2021.
Land Rover unveiled a completely redesigned generation at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2019, switching from body-on-frame architecture to an aluminum unibody monocoque. Assembly moved to a modern facility in Nitra, Slovakia, offering two-door, four-door, and extended eight-seat body configurations. In 2021, the company introduced a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 386 kW (518 hp), which propelled the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and reached a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). Motoring journalists honored the reimagined vehicle with the 2021 World Car Design of the Year trophy.
