Ferrari 488
The Ferrari 488 is a mid-engine sports car manufactured in Italy from 2015 to 2020. Ferrari presented the model as the successor to the 458 line at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2015. It marked the return of turbocharging to the mid-engine eight-cylinder model family for the first time since the late 1980s.
The styling team under Flavio Manzoni at the Ferrari Styling Centre created the body shape to generate downforce without active wings. Large side air intakes channeled airflow into the engine radiators and intercoolers, while a central front aero pillar split incoming air beneath the floor. In 2016, the design received the Red Dot Best of the Best award for product design. The automotive publication Top Gear selected the coupe as Supercar of the Year in 2015, and American magazine Motor Trend named it the Best Driver's Car in 2017.
Buyers chose between the two-door coupe, badged GTB, and the Spider convertible with a folding aluminum hardtop that opened in fourteen seconds. The rear mid-mounted twin-turbocharged V8 engine developed 493 kW (670 hp). Power went to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The coupe reached a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph) and accelerated from zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.0 seconds. In 2018, Ferrari introduced the lightened Pista variant, which increased engine output and added track-focused bodywork derived from the racing program.
In endurance racing, factory-supported teams campaigned the 488 GTE and GT3 versions across international championships. The GTE variant won the LMGTE Pro category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2019 with drivers Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado, and Daniel Serra. The same platform secured the manufacturer title in the FIA World Endurance Championship for Ferrari in 2016 and 2017. Over five years of global sports car competition, racing derivatives of the 488 scored more than four hundred race victories, concluding its frontline factory competition career in 2022.
